In aviation it is customary that runways are named based on their magnetic heading. Every runway has two magnetic headings (named directions), looking from each end to the other one. Istanbul Atatürk Airport has 3 runways with directions: 17L/35R, 17R/35L and 05/23.
On some airports there are special signs “L” or “R”. They mean, respectively, the runway on the left or right side, looking in the direction of the runway’s magnetic heading. For runway on water ther is special sign “W”.
